Job Title: Asphalt Plant Operator, Night Shift

Hours: Fulltime

Rate of Pay: TBD

Location: Markham & Richmond Hill

COMPANY: Miller Paving Limited



This candidate must possess a strong safety culture and be able to meet these minimum responsibilities and requirements and assure that quality aggregates are produced at maximum production levels.



  • Communicate with other plants concerning spare parts, personnel, product information, & backups

  • Production/plant supervision

  • Advise plant crew of next day’s production and/or maintenance schedule

  • Monitor plant start‑up (dryer, cold feed, etc.)

  • Plan and manage start-ups and shut-downs to minimize costs

  • Monitor (by test, etc.) plant rate of production

  • Operate plant (mix or batch asphalt through best practices)

  • Operate other asphalt plant facilities to fill in for vacation time offs and sick employees when required

  • Verify material on hand to produce mixes schedule; order, receive and record material

  • Manage on-hand material quantities to minimize costs

  • Send daily production report to manager

  • Communicate and coordinate with Quality Control to fully understand mix requirements

  • Communicate and coordinate with customers to clarify actual mix needs

  • Monitor and document (by test, etc.) mix quality/stack emissions and bag log book

  • Monitor and/or assist in plant maintenance and mobile equipment (loaders), as required

  • Carry out preventive maintenance inspection schedule

  • Repair mechanical issues and troubleshoot plant issues

  • Maintain adequate spare parts inventory and appropriate tool inventory to perform timely

  • Repairs; order parts/materials as required, pick‑up parts/materials as required, compare prices

  • For all items for approval by Area Plant Manager

  • Verify crew is on site on time to start production (complete time sheets and days off requests)

  • Provide training for crew members through OJT, cross training, and tool box meetings. Keep crew members informed of other training opportunities

  • Insure training requirements are met

  • Document incidents, injury’s and near misses

    • Assure plant crew compliance with company policies

    • Insure all employees are supervised, informed and provided with proper safety equipment (PPE)

    • Establish a site safety plan

    • Conduct daily and weekly safety tool box meetings

    • Train new employees, visitors, drivers, and others on site safety requirements

    • Enforce safety equipment requirements

    • Daily EPA records and bag house records are completed

    • MSDS reports and system is in place and working

    • Lock out/tag out requirements are met

    • Confined space entry requirements

    • Safety records are completed for Managers review

    • Company bulletin boards are updated in their respective units

    • Manage and minimize environmental impacts (real and perceived)

    • Maintain good housekeeping diligence

    • And other duties as assigned



    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in operations

    • Strong leadership and experience in the supervision of staff

    • Appreciation for a high level of quality standards is required

    • Strong communication and leadership skills are necessary

    • Ability to develop strong leadership

    • Valid driver’s license with a clean abstract and daily access to a vehicle

    • Willingness to work occasional weekends and evening shifts as the schedule demands

    • Excellent organizational and people skills and attention to detail

    • Excellent time management skills
